English as a Second Language
We realize it is not an easy thing to leave your homeland, move to the United States, and embark on learning a new way of life as well as a new language. For this reason, we welcome adult students to join us in learning conversational English in a fun and relaxed way.
Three levels of classes are offered: beginner, intermediate, and advanced, as well as a Citizenship preparation class. Classes meet each Thursday from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Education Building, first floor. The evening begins with a 1-hour teaching period, followed by a 30-minute break for large group devotional and snacks, and concludes with a 30- minute teaching period. Classes are free, but there is a $20 fee for materials (student book). Adult students may join at any time during the year, September to May. Childcare is provided free of charge.
We also offer one 8-week ESL class in the summer (June, July): “Cookies and Conversation”. This conversation class meets on Wednesday nights 6:00-7:15pm, also in the Ed Bldg 1st Floor. All of our teachers are certified volunteers from FBCMel. Several have a background of public school teaching, and each has a love for people of the nations. It is our pleasure to meet each week with students from many different countries. Our goal is to model and communicate the love of Christ as we teach conversational English and develop relationships that are culturally diverse.
